1,487 deaths, 24,638 cases of COVID-19 reported in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — There are now a total of 1,487 COVID-19 deaths and 24,638 confirmed cases in Michigan, according to Sunday data reported by Johns Hopkins.

That's 95 more deaths reported from Saturday, which is significantly down from the 111 deaths reported the day before.

The number of positive COVID-19 cases are also decreasing, with just 645 being reported on Sunday, significantly lower than the 1,210 that were reported on Saturday.

Cumulative data shows that 433 patients have recovered from the coronavirus (COVID-19) as of Saturday, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

"We are not out of the woods yet," Gov. Whitmer tweeted when announcing the deaths.

The state still ranks third behind New York and New Jersey for the most cases and deaths from COVID-19 in the country.

The percentage of deaths by age is below.

0-19 - 0%
20-29 - 1%
30-39 - 2%
40-49 - 5%
50-59 - 11%
60-69 - 21%
70-79 - 28%
80+ - 34%

The average age for deaths is 72.3 yers old with the median age of 73. The age range is 20-107.

On Friday, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services announce the state agreed with nearly all of the state's health insurance company to waive cost-sharing, including copays, deductibles and coninsurance, for COVID-19 testing and treatment.

“Michiganders that are fighting for their lives should not have the extra burden of fighting with their health insurer to cover the costs of their care,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “I am thankful that health insurers agreed to cover Michiganders’ coinsurance, deductibles, and copays as we fight this virus. It’s going to take all of us doing our part to slow the spread of COVID-19. We will get through this together”

The insurers who have agreed to waive cost-sharing are:

  • Aetna Better Health of Michigan
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network, MI Blue Cross Complete
  • HAP, Alliance Health
  • Humana Insurance
  • McLaren Health Plan
  • Meridian Health Plan
  • Molina Healthcare Michigan
  • Physicians Health Plan (PHP)
  • Priority Health, Priority Health Insurance Company, Priority Health Choice, Total Health Choice
  • United Healthcare Insurance, United Healthcare Insurance Community Plan
