Citizens in Shelby Twp. speak out over potentially enormous sewer bills tied to new development

Anger over a proposed development project is the result of fears that it could cost Shelby Township citizens a fortune.

They say it has to do with costly sewer upgrades many feel are not necessary, and way too expensive.

State Representative Pete Lucido, a Republican from the 36th District, heard from those expressing concerns at a town hall style meeting.

Some were even afraid they would have to move, or risk going broke.

It's all because of a proposed residential development that could break ground in May.

It's located between 25 and 26 Mile roads, between Jewell and Hayes.

It's an area where most currently have septic and well systems, but many could still be forced to either switch to sewer, or simply pay for new sewer lines.

The potential cost could be tens of thousands of dollars in special assessments.

We reached out the the township supervisor tonight but still haven't heard back.

The Township board meets next on Tuesday, March 7th. The issue will be discussed at public comment.
