An age-old board game is getting a high-tech makeover -- and judging from its quickly funded Kickstarter page, the new model appears to have excited a number of chess fans.
The board is called Square Off, and the creators are billing it as the "world's smartest chessboard."
Square Off reportedly uses Bluetooth technology and magnetic mechanisms to let players face off even if they aren't in the same room. An app essentially acts as the remote control for the board.
On its Kickstarter page, creators say users can also put the board in training mode, challenging artificial intelligence to a fun little match.
It appears there's also an option for watching professional matches unfold right in front of you.
While there's always a risk associated with funding products, Square Off quickly blew through its Kickstarter goal, raising more than $100,000 in just a couple of days.
Super early backers were able to snag one for about $200.
On the Kickstarter page, the creators note that chess is just the beginning, they want to create similar solutions for other popular board games.
