A case of scarlet fever was reported in a classroom at Weston Elementary School in Imlay City.

A letter sent home to parents by school officials advised them to check their children carefully and to inform the school if they suspect their children have it.

Scarlet fever is a highly contagious bacterial illness that develops in some people who have strep throat. It features a bright red rash that covers most of the body. It is almost always accompanied by a sore throat and a high fever.

Scarlet fever is most common in children 5 to 15 years of age. 

Symptoms include:

  • Red rash 
  • Red lines
  • Flushed face
  • Strawberry tongue
  • Fever of 101 degrees or higher, often with chills
  • Very sore and red throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Enlarged glands in the neck that are tender to the touch
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
