GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Calvin university is creating a sand dune on campus. They're bringing in more than 1,200 tons of sand for research purposes.

The sand was dumped on the east side of campus Tuesday, and on Wednesday it was spread out even more. The goal is to give students an opportunity to study sand dunes without disrupting the natural ecosystem of having to travel all the way to Lake Michigan.

"Here we'll do field-based experiments, rather than studying a natural dune, we'll be able to set up some experiments," said Calvin University professor Deanna VanDijk. "Obviously, this is not going to compare with the beautiful Lake Michigan dunes in terms of size, in terms of shape of an entire dune, but this will be a good environment here that will allow us to do real and good learning and also good research."

The dune will be used during the fall semester.
