The world of meteorology has several terms that sound cool and unique and the Bomb Cyclone is no different. Within the weather community it is known as Bombogenesis or explosive cyclogenesis. When this process takes place in the atmosphere the pressure drops suddenly creating powerful winds at the surface. These storms can also create some of the most memorable snow storms on the East Coast known as Nor'easters.
The storm hitting Michigan this weekend won't be the strongest cyclone on record but it'll be strong enough to get your attention. Wind gusts near 60 mph or greater are possible along with rain, storms and even a quick change over to snow. Severe weather will take place south of Michigan, but metro Detroit will dodge the severe weather threat this time. Our impacts will primarily be from high winds. Prepare now for power outages since the rain, which arrives first, will soften the ground increasing the possibility of falling trees once the wind gets going.
