Ax throwing bar in Auburn Hills has liquor license suspended for one day

A popular ax throwing bar in Auburn Hills had its liquor license suspended for one day after the state questioned its safety.

At a commission hearing in August, members ordered a one-day suspension of the liquor license at HUB Stadium in Auburn Hills.

The suspension stemmed from a safety investigation that occurred in June, where investigators looked at social media posts from the HUB that showed things like people throwing axes at bottles of liquor or bouncing axes off the floor to hit the target.

Other activities included:

  • A person flipping the ax in mid-air and catching with the other hand before throwing the ax at the target.
  • A person throwing two axes at once.
  • Three people identified in the video as coaches throwing axes at one target at the same time.
  • A person dropping and catching axes behind his back before throwing two axes at the same time at a target.
  • A person attempting to balance feet on a strap, walking barefoot tightrope-style, carrying and tossing an ax at the target.
  • A person juggling two axes before tossing them at the target.

The commission ordered that the licenses and permits should be suspended on Sept. 10 to allow for structural and policy changes. At the hearing, HUB stated they had implemented some changes and would continue to implement others.

Seven Action News reached out to the HUB and its lawyers, but they did not respond to the request for comment.
