Shark Week is here and the shark movies are chumming up the airwaves like never before. If you're a fan of Syfy's campy Sharknado series of cinematic masterpieces then you’re probably counting down the days until Sharknado 5: Global Swarming comes out. Until then, Jared Cotter has something for you to chew on with five crazy things you didn't know about Sharknado.
1. It Really Happened!
As ridiculous as it may sound, it actually has happened, on a smaller scale, of course. There have been numerous reports of fish raining from the sky all over the world. Scientist think this is caused by twisters that hit the open ocean and transport the sea critters inland.
2. Sharknado Had a Rocky Start
Syfy produced a made for TV movie with a now familiar storyline. The film's star, One Tree Hill's Paul Johansson, and the "rocky" plot, had fans twisting the dial. Stonados bombed too, but most likely spawned what is arguably the greatest/ worst TV movie ever made.
3. It Spun Off Side Businesses
Sharknado not only revived Tara Reid and Ian Ziering's careers, it spun off side businesses. Ian has a clothing brand called Chainsaw and Tara had a short-lived perfume called Shark by Tara.
4. Made for Cheap
Sharknado was produced for less than $2 million. That's the food and coffee budget of most movies. It has raked in more than $20 million from DVD, streaming and toy sales so far.
5. Big Cameos
The trademark celebrity cameos keep getting weirder. Sharknado 5: Global Swarming will feature Charo as the Queen of England, the great Fabio, legend Olivia Newton-John, skater Tony Hawk and rocker Bret Michaels.
You can check out Sharknado 5: Global Swarming when it airs on Syfy Aug. 6, 2017!
