A 15-year-old Detroit student has been charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault at Central High School.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worth announced the charges against the student on Thursday, Oct. 18.
The incident occurred on Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. at the school.
According to a release, the male student allegedly took two cellphones from a female student's desk. The female student then followed the suspect into a hallway to retrieve her phones. That's when she alleges that he grabbed her by the neck and forced her into a back stairway. While there, the victim says the suspect choked her, pulled her down the stairs and sexually assaulted her.
The juvenile suspect, if convicted, could be sentenced as a juvenile or as an adult – or the judge can blend the sentence, combining a juvenile and adult sentence, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Chrystal Wilson, a spokeswoman for Detroit Public Schools Community District, released this statement regarding the incident:
"An incident occurred involving two high school students at Central. After immediate action taken by the authorities and building leaders, a thorough investigation yielded a confirmation of sexual wrongdoing. The allegation against the student led to an arrest for sexual misconduct. Please know the student will not be returning to the building."
The juvenile has been charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct; four counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct; and larceny under $200.
A preliminary hearing was held Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Juvenile Detention Facility. A $25,000 cash bond was ordered, pending a preliminary examination scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26.
According to a release, if bond is posted, the juvenile suspect is ordered to have no contact, direct or indirectly, with the 15-year-old female victim. The juvenile must also not have contact with any potential witness in the case.
