BATH TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Bath Township Board voted Thursday to place an altered operating millage proposal on the November ballot, days after voters rejected a similar measure that would have helped balance the township's budget.

The new proposal would levy 1 additional mill to the township's current operating millage. For a home with $100,000 in taxable value, that would amount to an extra $100 in taxes.
Residents voice opposition at meeting
Residents who attended Thursday's meeting said they would not support any additional tax burden.
"It's the principle. People keep asking us for money. The cost of gas, groceries, senior care, education, it's all going up," one resident said.
Another resident directed frustration at the board over the decision to revisit the issue so soon after voters rejected it.
"I cannot believe, with the affordability crisis that we are facing, that you, after being told no on any tax increases, you are bringing this back to the well again," the resident said.
Board defends decision to return question to voters
Board members said they understood residents' concerns about raising taxes but maintained that returning the question to voters was the appropriate course of action.
"This is our job. It's to try to take the information in, make the best decision we think is possible for us and our neighbors, and then to ask the public that question. And the public then, their role is to tell us yes or no," a board member said.
