LANSING, Mich. — A mullet is a unique hairstyle: business in the front and a party in the back.

And when people want a mullet in Lansing, they make their way to Bliss Salon Spa & Boutique to see hair artist Ashley Medina.

“If you would have told me or my friends back when I was in high school that I would be doing mullets, it was the furthest thing from our mind,” Medina said.

Now mullets are one of her specialties, along with curls and hair tattoos.

She started doing hair at a young age, starting with herself.

“If my mom hadn’t scheduled an appointment yet, I would just go into the bathroom with some scissors and do my best," Medina said.

"It was really about myself early on. I really wanted good hair and couldn't really afford to do it as often as I wanted to."

So she started experimenting and got so good her friends and family members ended up wanting her to do their hair.

“I started realizing over the years how much more rewarding it is to help other people look good," Medina said.

Lately, she's been helping Lansing locals embrace their mullets and getting creative on social media.

She makes TikTok videos and has created hashtags to help people find her as a stylist. You can find her under the user name AshleyMedinaHair.

Medina says her mullet journey started with her daughter's birthday party.

“I didn’t have time to get ready for it," Medina says.

"When the pictures came back from the party, I was so disappointed in how my hair looked.”

So, she went on a search to find a hairstyle that would look cool with minimal effort.

And, eventually, she decided on a mullet.

“Over time with having the mullet, I started noticing all the other mullets around town," Medina said. "I started stopping people on the street and asking the story of how they got the mullet.”

She started taking mullet selfies with strangers and even found her a mullet man.

“The mullet is also super ambiguous. So, it works for men and women and everything in between," Medina says.

Medina says people come from across the state just for her to cut their hair.

Christopher Hallwood is one of Medina's clients. She's been doing his hair for a year and a half now.

He says he found her through someone else who had a mullet.

“I was looking for someone who specialized in mullets, and everyone was telling me you should go see this girl," Hallwood said. "So finally, I gave it a chance and never went back. Nobody else has ever touched my hair since.”

Hallwood said he likes the mullet because there are so many personal styles you can get, even one to fit your personality.

He's moving to Chicago soon but says he will come back to Lansing twice a month just to have Medina cut his hair.

Medina says some of her other male clients will also travel far.

“I never really saw that either, that men would be really particular about who cuts their mullets and how,” Medina said.

Her mullet gang just keeps on growing as more people find her.

She's just happy to be doing what she loves and helping boost people's confidence.

“It’s so funny that I can just live my dream. I’m just getting away with it and having so much fun.”
