Police will be out on lakes and rivers across Michigan all summer, but will be upping patrols for the holiday weekend.
That's because with so many people enjoying the holiday out on the water, boating safety is especially important.
Make sure you are prepared in your boats with coast guard approved life jackets, a fire extinguisher, your license and registration, and that you abide by all the safety rules on the water.
Also, make sure the driver of the boat isn't drinking. With so many people on lakes and rivers for the weekend, they should be completely aware of their surroundings.
Police will be stopping boats to do checks, and they want to make sure boaters are educated on what they need to do to stay safe.
