The 4th of July is perfect for many Michiganders to hop in the car, head to the nearby lake or travel to an exciting destination. While planning for the fun times to come, the Michigan State Police want residents to be safe, and prepare for possible emergencies which may arise.
To keep residents safe, the MSP is encouraging travelers to have an emergency preparedness kit in their vehicle while they are traveling this 4th of July.
“The Fourth of July weekend is when individuals and families travel and take extended vacations,” Captain Chris A. Kelenske, Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD said in a release. “Whether traveling across the state or nation, you should prepare in advance for all types of emergencies or disasters that could affect your vacation. A little planning could be a lifesaver if a disaster strikes while away from home.”
Before hitting the road, travelers should know weather and possible disasters that are in the area they are traveling to, know safe shelters locations near where they are staying and develop an emergency communication plan for everyone in the group.
A travel-sized emergency pack should also be compiled, and have water, snacks, a first-aid kit, hand-crank flashlight, radio and any medication or baby formula if needed.
While on the road, check the weather along the route and if there is severe weather, the MSP suggest delaying the trip. There should also be someone who can check in on pets if bad weather strikes.
Travelers should also have a map with them, keep the fuel tank above half-full, have extra clothes and a vehicle repair kit.
There is also an app from the American Red Cross, which helps with first-aid, weather and other disasters and more.
