Kirk Gibson receives honorary doctorate from MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) - Former MSU Spartan and Detroit Tigers great Kirk Gibson was honored Friday at MSU's undergraduate commencement where he received an honorary doctorate of humanities.

Gibson talked to the students about overcoming troubles in life. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease two years ago. Since then, he's created the Kirk Gibson Foundation to raise awareness and search for new treatments for the disease.

His message to graduates, "Everything has to be done with class, integrity and as you know that's something I had to learn and I'm proud to say that I'm like that now."

Other speakers during the 2017 graduation convocation included Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation and Susan Avery, an atmospheric physicist.

Gibson has been a coach and manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks and is now a broadcaster for Fox Sports Detroit.
