If you still plan on sending Christmas gifts through the mail, local post offices will now be open on Sundays for the rest of the holiday season.

The U.S. Postal Service is committed to making sure the holiday season is accommodating for everyone, and that means being open even on Sundays.

"It certainly increases from Thanksgiving through the first of the year and so we are ready, we are ready," said Sabrina Todd, Strategic Communications.

December 20th is the last day to send priority mail to ensure it makes it by Christmas. If you want to send something overseas, the postal service has a list of cut-off dates for different countries on their website.

" there are so many different cutoff dates.Based upon, especially if they are military, based upon where they are stationed and their different countries. So it's best for them to go onto USPS.com," said Todd.

If you can't make it to the post office in time you can go online and ship the packages from home. If it's a larger package, just let the post office know and a carrier will come pick it up.

"They can go online and they can mail their package. They can make a mailing label there, place it on their package, and then they can place it in their outgoing mail," said Todd.

The post office also has a self-service kiosk open 24 hours where people can send their packages after hours. Customers tell News 10 the extra hours really help during the holidays.

"Oh I love having it open on a Sunday, I wish they were open on Sundays year round. I'm really happy during the holidays because there was nobody here. It was easy in and easy out," said Customer. Nancy Fleck.

An estimated 15 billion cards, letters, and packages will be sent out during the holiday season. With the increased mail volume, the postal service will be delivering packages outside of regular delivery hours. That includes Sundays and Christmas.

"We will deliver priority mail express packages on Christmas. We have been doing that for years and we will continue to do it this year," said Todd.

The Lansing and East Lansing post office will be open next Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
