Local charities, businesses team up for Giving Tuesday

There was Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and now today is Giving Tuesday.

It's a chance for people across the country to give back, and a lot of Mid-Michigan groups are getting into the spirit.

The goal is to make Lansing one of the most generous regions in Michigan, and charities are hoping people will take the time to donate, volunteer or spread the word today.

Local businesses are donating portions of their proceeds today, and charities like "Helping Women Period" are kicking off fundraisers.

The group collects pads and tampons for low-income women.

Helping Women Period volunteers are doing something unique today: a porch pick-up.

Fill out a simple form online, place the items you are willing to donate on your porch, and volunteers will pick up the items.

Donated tampons and pads will go to the many groups the charity supports like Cristo Rey, The Greater Lansing Housing Coalition and more.

The goal is to collect 2,016 pads and tampons for these charities.

It addresses a need in our community that often goes unnoticed.

Spreading the word is easy, just hash tag #GivingTuesday when you post on social media about donating, volunteering or purchasing items.
