American Nutcracker offers fresh take on tradition

Posted

More than 30 dancers and 80 performers from the community will put on a new take on a holiday classic.

The Greater Lansing Ballet Company will bring in the sights and sounds of the holiday season with their performance of the American Nutcracker Ballet this weekend at Pattengill Auditorium, located at 626 Marshall Street in Lansing.

“American Nutcracker is a fresh take on the holiday tradition and GLBC is proud to showcase the talents of over 30 dancers, with an ensemble of nearly 80 performers from our community,” said Jim McEwan, artistic director of GLBC. “This year, all new ballet choreography takes the Nutcracker into the 1940s. While utilizing Tchaikovsky’s classic musical score, new costumes, sets and steps will take the audience on an adventure with Clara for a new feel and experience.”

The Nutcracker choreography by Jim McEwan is loosely based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s original Nutcracker fairy tale, which was first performed in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. In his first year as artistic director, Mr. McEwan takes the helm of GLBC, founded 25 years ago under Barbara Banasikowski Smith. GLBC has a rich heritage, with many former dancers now performing professionally all over the world and on Broadway.
