After nearly a month of overnight closures, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will return to normal 24-hour operations soon.
According to the group that runs the tunnel, it will resume 24-hour operations, 7 days a week, beginning on July 19 and continuing through mid-August.
At the end of June, the tunnel started closing between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays to complete ancillary work on a $22 million renovation project that began two years ago.
After mid August, the tunnel will close for one night only per week through Sept. 30 to finish the renovation project.
The closures began in January 2017 and included replacement of the 89-year-old tunnel's concrete ceiling, as well as masonry, electrical work and other infrastructure improvements.
“We know that thousands of people rely on the tunnel every day, and we would like to thank them for their patience and understanding during this important renovation work,” Detroit-Windsor Tunnel President Neal Belitsky said. “This work was important to ensure that the tunnel will continue to be the premier gateway between Windsor and Detroit for years to come.”
