Lead exposure during childhood may have long lasting effects on intelligence and lifestyle.

Duke University researchers looked at data for 1,000 people living in New Zealand.

Those with high blood lead levels at the age of 11, had lower brain function and IQ scores 3 decades later. They also tended to be less educated and have lower paying jobs than their peers.

Experts say these findings suggest early lead exposure disrupts brain development and triggers cognitive decline.
