The "Wreaths Across America Campaign" is a campaign to remember those who have served our country by placing remembrance wreaths on the graves of Veterans across the nation.
FOX 47's Chelsea Snyder got a in-person look at what goes into the event.
St. Johns Catholic Cemetery is just 1 out of 1,200 locations taking part in the "Wreaths Across America Campaign". The campaign originally started at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring Veterans of all branches by placing a wreath on their grave.
"Freedom is not passed down in our bloodstreams, it's something that is earned. It is our Veterans, these ladies and gentleman, that went into the military and supported our country and defended our freedoms are why we are here today," said David Welihan, co-commander of the Jackson County Veterans Council.
St. Johns was able to raise $31,500, and with the turnout of the event, each and every one the Veterans buried at Jackson Cemetery were able to have a wreath placed on their grave.
"Having a friend, you know, die at a young age in the service was to make sure that I carry that forward and we truly never forget that sacrifice that he did and those that served with him," said attendee, Keely Zimmerman.
All 2,100 wreaths were placed on the graves while saying the Veterans name out loud to honor their memory and service.
"You know just saying their name and saying thank you to them, it would mean the world to them," said Zimmerman.
A ceremony was held before the laying of the wreaths honoring current members of the military, those missing in action, and servicemen who have died during active duty.
"Tomorrow is not promised so we really need to take it and give back as much as we can and honor the people who have done it for us," said Zimmerman.
