The Michigan State University Board of Trustees announced at meeting Thursday that the rate for Room and Board for Undergraduates will rise.

Michigan State University's President Lou Anna Simon says it's a marginal increase.

"At 2.5 percent, it's the lowest in 19 years," President Simon said.

Under this proposed rate increase, the residence hall double room rate would increase by $100 dollars to $4,120 per year and the silver unlimited meal plan will increase by $142 to $5,856 per year. For MSU students next year, the total for residence hall room and board would be $9,976 .

Vinnie Gore, MSU Vice President for Auxiliary Enterprises, says the raise is due to inflation and building repairs.

"Our buildings are between 50 and 70 years old so we are putting money back into the facilities," Gore said. "The new rate is the third lowest in the Big Ten ."

This increase has many students worried about their future.

Jamal Michel is a student at MSU who currently lives off campus.

He tells me it's cheaper.

"Living off campus is less expensive ... it's less that $1,000 ," Michel says.

And he is not alone.

Another MSU student Lin Ou says MSU raises its tuition every semester.

But others who live on campus say the increase is needed.

"I think it's a good thing ... it's all beneficial for the students," Amanda Minnier, MSU student.

The MSU Board of Trustees says the 2.5 percent increase will take place fall of next year.
