A bill that would ban utilities from charging a fee to customers who don't want smart meters will get a hearing in the state house next week.

Right now, Consumers Energy and DTE charge a one time fee of around $70 and then around $10 a month to customers who want to keep their old meters.

The utilities say the money pays to maintain the older equipment and banning the fees would unfairly shift the costs to customers who have new meters .

The hearing is set for Tuesday.

We'll let you know if a vote happens.
