Governor Rick Snyder took a tour of the "Vocational Village" at Parnall Correctional Facility in Jackson Monday.
The program trains prisoners for high demand jobs in the skilled trades. Governor Snyder applauded the initiative, saying it will help cut down on the rate of prisoners returning to jail.
He said, "To have a career opportunity that is good, well paying, and established when you leave is a fabulous head start. So I think we'll see a dramatic difference in how many of these folks come back."
This is the second vocational program within the Michigan Department of Corrections. Governor Snyder says the next step is adding a program for women.
