The America & Me Essay contest encourages young people to write about their American heroes, especially ones who have made a personal difference.

The contest this year will run September 1 through November 16, and will ask students to write on the topic "My Personal Michigan Hero." Sign-up kits will be sent out to schools in Michigan in early September.

The contest is open to any 8th grade student in Michigan who is enrolled in public, or private school. It offers awards on the local, and statewide levels. Students from nearly 400 Michigan schools submitted over 3,500 essays during last year's contest.

This year, the first place entry from each school will be entered into the statewide competition. The top ten essays will be chosen, and each winner will get a $1,000 cash award.

The winners will be honored in May 2018 in Lansing. They'll meet government leaders, and be honored in pre-game ceremonies at a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game. There will also be an awards banquet on the Michigan Princess Riverboat.

The top 10 essays will also be printed in a book called My Personal Michigan Hero. It will be distributed to schools to introduce the 49th annual America & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.
