Just Before Their Fight, Mayweather And McGregor May Change The Rules

Just a few weeks ahead of the blockbuster boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, the fighters could be changing the rules.

The fighters could use 8-ounce gloves, dropping them from 10 ounces. That should benefit McGregor, who's used to fighting in 4-ounce gloves in UFC matches.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which is overseeing the bout, says a fight at this weight should use 10-ounce gloves. But both fighters said they're willing to waive those rules.

Two ounces may not sound like a lot of difference, but McGregor could need all the extra hand speed he can get. Mayweather is notoriously tough to hit, preferring to dodge, defend and throw well-timed counterpunches.

McGregor will likely have to knock Mayweather out to win the fight. The Irishman predicted that will happen by the second round if the lighter gloves are used.

Boxing experts don't think that's going to happen, though. McGregor has never been in a professional boxing match, while Mayweather has never lost one, going 49-0 in his career.

McGregor is a heavy underdog among oddsmakers, opening as an 11-1 long shot. But that hasn't stopped the betting public from favoring him.

Top sportsbooks in Las Vegas have said about 95 percent of the bets are coming in on McGregor. The fight is scheduled for Aug. 26.
