The Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter, or ICACS, is temporarily closing to incoming animals and adoptions due to Ringworm treatment protocols.

According to a spokesperson, there have been three positive dog cases, and five suspected cat cases at the shelter. Because the shelter features open cat colony rooms for adoptable pets, it has led to numerous animals exposed.

"In order to proceed with veterinary recommended treatment and sanitizing, ICACS will not be accepting dogs or doing adoptions until Sept. 25," a news release said Friday.

The shelter will not be accepting cats from the public or doing cat adoptions until further notice, with an estimated return for regular operations for cats on Oct. 1, according to an ICACS spokesperson.

"This is a very difficult situation, however, shelter staff is putting public safety and animal welfare concerns as the highest priority," said ICACS spokesperson.

Per the Mayo Clinic, “Ringworm of the body is a fungal infection that develops on the top layer of your skin. It's characterized by a red circular rash with clearer skin in the middle. It may itch. Ringworm gets its name because of its appearance. No actual worm is involved.”

It is possible for ringworm to be transmitted between animals and humans, which is why the shelter said the temporary closing is being done to limit exposure to public and shelter animals.

Some services will still be available in limited capacities, the shelter said. That includes things like dog license sales and owners who might be looking for their lost pets.

Animal Control Officer hours will not be affected.

Animals recently adopted or redeemed from the shelter that may be diagnosed with ringworm at a wellness exam can contact the shelter for medical assistance and treatment options.

Adoption events planned for this weekend (Frandor Shopping Center and Tractor Supply Company in Williamston) and next weekend (Joeys Pet Outfitters in Williamston) are canceled and will be rescheduled for another date in the future.

Assistance from the public for dry dog and cat food and clean towels for sanitation are greatly needed and appreciated. For further information regarding shelter activities, visit the shelter's website.
