JACKSON, Mich. — Francis Street in Jackson might be renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Drive soon.

Jackson City Council is having a special meeting on Thursday where residents will have the chance to voice their opinions on the name change.

Council is expected to vote during the meeting.

"I think it's great. I think it would be grand," said Jackson resident Elaine McKinney.

Some business owners have expressed concern about the cost of changing their address, but others say it's worth it.

"Marketing has Francis Street on it, so it would be something we'd have to advertise to get people to know that it's still us on this street," said business owner Marie Fletcher.

"I think it's long overdue. Everybody's willing to forego the cost to make that occur."

During Thursday's meeting, city officials also will talk about the financial impact the name change would have on the city, as dozens of street signs would need to be changed on that portion of the road.

"There's been a lot of people in the community over the past several decades who have wanted to make that official," said Aaron Dimick with the City of Jackson.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Jackson City Hall.
