LANSING, Mich. — Not having power can become a dangerous situation very quickly, but there are things you can do to get ready for that possibility.
About 1,000 people from eight states helped Consumers Energy restore power to the west side of the state last week.
More than 300 of them are sticking around in case the ice and wind cause more outages.
Officials say there's not much you can do to prevent it, but you can be prepared.
"Make sure you've got a supply of food and water at the ready, flashlights, charging your phone in advance so you've got a full charge to carry you through, and make sure you know where things are in your house that you're going to need, whether it's blankets or things that are just going to make you be more comfortable," said Brian Wheeler, spokesperson for Consumers Energy.
If you see a downed power line, stay at least 25 feet away from it and call 911.
