State Christmas tree to be harvested this week

The Christmas tree that will sit on the State Capitol lawn this holiday season is being harvested this week.

The 61-foot spruce in Stephenson will be cut down on Thursday morning and put up at the Michigan State Capitol Saturday morning. The tree is being donated by William Winter and his grandson, Alex Stevens.

A brief ceremony will be held at 10am Thursday and will include music from the local school band and remarks from Stephenson Mayor, Lowell Bengry and Denny Olson, representing harvesting team. The tree will be harvested by the Michigan Association of Timberman, the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association and Michigan Operators Engineers at no cost to the owners.

The tree will be delivered to the State Capitol around 8am Saturday. , Boy Scout Troups 125 and 109 will untie the tree. The Hi-Ball Co. of Lansing will volunteer a crane and crew to set the tree at the intersection of Capitol and East Michigan avenues.

It will be lit on the night of the 33rd Annual Silver Bells in the City, which is set for Friday, November 17.
