Melanie McNamara is almost finished with chemotherapy after being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in April.

"I feel amazing," smiles McNamara, "I've gone through this process and just the support that I've received from friends and family and the Sparrow staff and family here is just amazing."

The support has come from the community as well in the form of pillows handmade by local Zonta groups. And McNamara says they've helped her through the treatment process.

"It just gives you some support in an area you might [have pain] from a biopsy or having surgery or something so it's easy cause then it straps around you and just hangs there, it's better than just holding a pillow," explains McNamara.

Because the pillows have meant so much to the patients who have used them, the Zonta club is ecstatic to send more to the Sparrow Cancer Center.

"We all get together, we make them, and we enjoy giving them, and we enjoy when the patients send us thank yous," smiles Melody Atwood of the Zonta group of Lansing. "It brings a tear to everybody's eye. It really chokes you up big time."

The three local groups in the area are going to give 100 each to Sparrow.

"This is our mission," explains Atwood, "is to help women and girls in our community, in our country, and in the world."

McNamara says she hopes every patient can get one of the pillows so they can feel the same comfort she has.
