An extremely rare case of strep throat is costing a Michigan man his hands and his feet.

Kevin Breen went to the doctor for stomach swelling and pain. His feet and hands also turned black.

Doctors in Grand Rapids didn't know what was causing the severe reactions until they uncovered a rash on his chest. It provided a clue that led doctors to the diagnosis that strep had spread from his throat to his stomach and his body couldn't fight it.

"Life is forever going to be different, but different doesn't necessarily have to be bad. It's just going to be what we make it and we just have to figure it out, figure it our for our kids. Dad's going to have cool hands, dad's going to have cool feet," Breen's wife says.

Kevin's first amputation was scheduled for March 16.

Doctors say he is one of two men in the world who had strep travel from his throat to his stomach.
