Officials say Michigan State University plans to fund a version of a college prep program for Lansing high school students after its existing program was expected to end because of a technical error in a grant application.

Lansing School District spokesman Bob Kolt tells the Lansing State Journal that university officials told them this week the university will continue helping students prepare for college. Michigan State plans to discuss the update with parents.

The newspaper earlier reported the error by Michigan State staff cost nearly $480,000 and meant an end to the longstanding program. Federal officials had rejected the university's request to renew its Upward Bound program grant in February.

Upward Bound was created to give low-income, first-generation college students or individuals with disabilities opportunities to further their education.
