Gateway Community Services Hosts Open House Event
November is National Runaway and Homeless Youth Awareness Month. In honor of this, Gateway Community Services is hosting the 2nd Annual Kevin Moody Open House on Saturday, November 9 from 11AM-2PM.
In 2007, Congress passed resolutions to make November a time to highlight youth homelessness because, in part, an average of 13 homeless youth die each day due to physical assault, illness, or suicide and “some homeless youth are expelled from their homes or run away after physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.” It’s estimated that more than 1.6 million children experience homelessness at one time in their lives.
Gateway Community Services has been working with runaway, homeless, and at risk youth in Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties since 1970. In addition to providing a toll free, 24-hour crisis and referral line we also provide an emergency shelter program, transitional living program, family counseling, group support services, and street outreach. The most recent available statistics suggest that the problem of youth homelessness is only increasing.
In order to commemorate National Runaway and Homeless Youth Awareness Month, Gateway Community Services is inviting donors and the public to an open house event where light refreshments will be served. This is an opportunity to tour the shelter and learn more about the programs offered for homeless and at-risk youth. The Kevin Moody house is located at 3240 S. Waverly Rd Lansing, MI 48911.
There is limited parking at the shelter. Additional parking is available at Hunter’s Ridge, the residential street located on the north side of the shelter.
