Local Fitness Studio Provides Free Fitness for Kids
LANSING, MICH. – The Institution, a new fitness studio in downtown Lansing, is on a mission to fight childhood obesity by presenting free fitness assemblies for local elementary school second and third graders.
Paul Nagel, co-owner of The Institution, visits different elementary schools in the Lansing School District during the week to train second and third grade students. The Institution also offers a free session at the studio from 11 a.m. to noon every Saturday for children ages 6- 12.
“Our goal is to teach kids the importance of fitness and good nutrition,” said Nagel. “They are responding positively to this program and even ask when I’ll be back again before I leave!”
Lansing schools are coping with recent budget cuts, forcing them to change how physical fitness programs are delivered. Instead of having dedicated physical education teachers and classes, classroom teachers are asked to create fitness experiences for students. The Institution’s program helps by providing innovative physical fitness opportunities.
“Paul had 45-50 kids moving and working out the entire hour he was in the school. For kids that age level, it was impressive to see them focusing for that long,” said Brian Murley, Fitness Coordinator for Lansing School District. “The music and the movements were creative, providing a fun, encouraging workout environment for the children.”
The R.I.P.P.E.D. 4 Kids program is a unique fitness formula aimed at getting children fit while having fun and moving to music. R.I.P.P.E.D. stands for: rhythm, intervals, power, plyometrics, endurance and diet. The kids also learn principles of the Captain’s Code – respect, integrity, positivity, perseverance, example and discipline – during the program. The Institution believes making fitness fun for children will help families’ lead healthier lives.
