The Detroit Red Wings have their first preseason game on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins but they may be without one of their best offensive players.

The team has yet to sign restricted free agent Andreas Athanasiou, and reports over the last few weeks have the 23-year-old forward weighing an option to play in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in Russia.

TSN's Bob McKenzie reported on Monday Detroit has a standing offer of two years, $3.8 million for Athanasiou. Ansar Khan of MLive reported last month that Athanasiou's agent, Darren Ferris, said there is a "considerable difference" between the Red Wings' and KHL offers.

According to McKenzie, Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland was in Toronto over the weekend to meet with Athanasiou and his agent where it appeared some progress was made.

Last season, Athanasiou had 18 goals and 29 points in 64 games despite averaging just 13:28 of ice time per game.

The two sides have been engaged in contract talks throughout the summer but the two sides have not come to a deal.
