The four Lansing Catholic Football players who knelt during the national anthem at school games will be honored tonight in a special ceremony at Lansing City Hall.
Michael Lynn III, Matthew Abdullah along with teammates Kabbash Richards and Roje Williams made headlines this fall after kneeling during the Star Spangled Banner in protest of racism and police brutality against African-Americans.
Backlash was swift with the players either not starting games, or having less playing time. The players also had to deal with harsh comments and chants from the crowd.
Once the season was over, the controversy on the football field moved to the basketball court. Junior Kabbash Richards opted to kneel during the anthem at basketball games. His teammate Roje Williams supported him.
Both Lynn and Abdullah have since left Lansing Catholic High School. Their parents say they were unhappy at the school and have transferred to Sexton and Holt High Schools to finish out their senior year.
Lansing City Council members will honor the 'Lansing Catholic High School 4' in a special ceremony at tonight's meeting. The council meeting beegins at 7 p.m. in council chambers on the 10th floor of City Hall.
