Students guarding Sparty statue for rivalry week

The rain Friday morning didn't deter Sparty Watch in East Lansing, where several students stayed camped out guarding the statue.

Before the rain started nearly 100 Michigan State students surrounded the statue for the rivalry week tradition. Students say no Wolverine fans have tried to vandalize the statue this year, but they have been driving by.

"Some Wolverines fans drove by in their car and yelled some pretty nasty things at us while we were watching the statue, but it's been a pretty calm week," said James O'Neill, a member of the Spartan Marching Band.

In the past Michigan fans have thrown gold paint on Sparty and even covered the Magic Johnson Statue during rivalry week.

MSU and the University of Michigan will face off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Big House.
