Controversial Call Highlights Replacement Ref Ineptitude
Was it a catch? An interception? Pass interference?
These are the questions being asked after a wild Packers-Seahawks game ended on a controversial hail mary. With time expiring, ex-Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson lofted a hail mary to the left corner of the end-zone. As the ball was in the air, it appeared that Seahawks receiver Golden Tate shoved off the Green Bay cornerback, which could have easily been flagged, and then came down fighting for possession of the ball with other cornerback M.D. Jennings. One referee overruled the other, and it was called a touchdown on the field. After a short review, the ruling was upheld, and the Packers rushed off the field, losing 14-12.
As if it couldn't get any worse for the replacement refs.
They shouldn't be here in the first place, nor should they receive all of the blame. With the owners locking out the union referees, there was no choice but to bring in alternates. Little did we know they would be this poor, inept, and any other negative adjective you can come up with. Quite simply, they can't keep up with the speed of the well oiled machines of the NFL, and it's showing. It's not completely their fault, as greed is extremely evident within the league. The union referees, owners, and Commissioner Roger Goodell all want a fair share of the revenue. Understandable. But when you all can't come together as one, you must negotiate and improvise. A major skill that business leaders have is that they keep each one of their employees happy, or at least attempt to. Roger Goodell has failed in that aspect, and is maintaining the power hungry label that he has fairly received since taking over in 2006.
Until things change, games will continue to be affected, and the best team may not be the last one standing.
I'm just glad I'm not a Green Bay fan.
