On Sunday, May 15, the Ingham County Land Bank will join Sparrow Health System and the Association for the Bingham Community Neighborhood Organization to celebrate the opening of a playground near the site of the former Bingham School in Lansing.

Now the future site of the Sparrow Plaza and Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, the closure of Bingham School resulted in the loss of green space and a place for kids to play. Working together, the ABC Neighborhood, Land Bank, Sparrow and community leaders found a new spot to develop a playground. The new park offers a play structure, benches and open space.

“This serves as a great example of coordination between an active neighborhood group, local government and institutional stakeholder residents in transforming a blighted property into a neighborhood asset,” said Jeff Burdick, executive director of the Ingham County Land Bank.

Sunday’s event at 1:30 p.m. will feature McGruff the Crime Dog and the Lansing Police Department creating ID badges for children.

The Land Bank is a county authority and strategic development tool that supports growth and investment in the community. With more than 60 community gardens, the Ingham County Land Bank Garden Program encourages and supports beautification and care of garden projects in Lansing and Ingham County.
