MSU Students Star in Production of 'Les Miserables'
Spiro Productions in partnership with The Other Mirror are proud to present Les Miserables. Featuring East Lansing's very own Steve Martin and Zachary Niedzwiecki, as well as Executive Producer, Justin Spiro--all from Michigan State University--be sure to expect nothing less than the best of the best.
Steve Martin will play Jean Valjean. After completing his undergraduate degree at MSU, Martin passed up a full ride to Juilliard to continue his education at MSU in the Vocal Performance Masters program, due to his love for the school and his mentors. Martin remarks that he is beyond thrilled to be playing the part of Jean Valjean. He notes that the take-home message of the production includes: "Anybody can be redeemed, everyone can be forgiven, everyone can change, should they choose to do so. Valjean chooses to change and Javert can't, and that's why I think he kills himself, is because he can't change. I feel like one of the biggest things is that anybody can change, everyone gets a second chance." It is all about accepting one's past, becoming redeemed, and moving toward a brighter future. Martin concludes by saying that he would be happy playing Jean Valjean for the rest of his life.
The character of Javert will be played by Zachary Niedzwiecki. Niedzwiecki is currently finishing his undergrad at MSU. Niedzwiecki says that he chose a career in musical theatre because of his love for singing. "I sing because it feels good. No matter how bad the day is, I come back to it because it is part of me." He notes that the role of Javert is unique and special because "everyone has a little Javert within themselves--anyone who wants to prove themselves, forget their past and make a better future for themselves--that is Javert."
The dynamic between Martin and Niedzwiecki is phenomenal. Niedzwiecki and Martin agree that performing requires a degree of vulnerability, and how important it is to grow and learn from one another throughout the production of the show. Executive Producer, Justin Spiro, spoke to the chemistry between Martin and Niedzwiecki, and their characters, "There is an established rapport of one another from years of friendship; they know each other outside the production and it gives them a natural rapport with one another that you otherwise wouldn't have. It is very natural and an organic process for them to sing with and against one another--it is something you can't create artificially."
"This show is about being a part of something larger than yourself, and changing the world for the better. It is about giving up those selfish needs and wants, and giving of yourself for the larger picture," says Niedzwiecki.
This classic musical will be a fully staged production by Executive Producer, Justin Spiro, Directed by, Katherine M. Carter, and music under the direction of Jim Territo. Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, Les Miserables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Miserables includes the classic songs, "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and many more!
