MSU Bakers Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month
EAST LANSING, Mich. — For the fifth consecutive October, MSU Bakers is supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Gwen’s Bagels.
Gwen's Bagels – pink, ribbon-shaped bagels with dried cranberries – celebrate breast cancer survivors and the memory of victims. Every bagel is handmade and baked fresh daily by MSU Bakers' Rita Lyon, whose mother Gwen (the namesake of the bagels) passed away in 1972 of breast cancer.
“Gwen’s Bagels began in 2009,” said Cindy Baswell, MSU Bakers manager. “To celebrate the success of Gwen’s Bagels, we’d like to break our record of 800 dozen for the month.”
Gwen’s Bagels are available through Oct. 31 and can be purchased at Sparty’s convenience stores and cafés located across campus, at the MSU Bakers Farm Stand from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Thursdays at The Rock near the MSU Auditorium or online at www.msubakers.com. Six bagels are available for $6.50, and $1 from every order is donated to the American Cancer Society.
“MSU Bakers is proud to support the fight against breast cancer and to honor Rita’s mother with these bagels,” Baswell said. “We’ve even deemed Wednesdays as ‘Gwensdays’ this year; all MSU Bakers team members wear pink Gwen’s Bagels shirts on Gwensday.”
MSU Bakers is operated by the Department of Culinary Services within the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services at Michigan State University. For more information visit: www.msubakers.com or www.eatatstate.com.
