MSU Community Music School and Common Ground Music Festival Partner for 'Rock Camp'
EAST LANSING–Among the big names performing at the Common Ground Music Festival this summer are a few local bands comprised of area middle and high school students. The teens are participants in the MSU Community Music School’s Rock Camp, which runs July 8-13. During the camp, the students will form their own bands and prepare for this ultimate gig.
The Rock Camp is in its fifth year and is made possible by a partnership with the Common Ground Music Festival.
“We still have openings for rock camp and would encourage students to check it out,” said Jaime DeMott, director of the MSU Community Music School. “We have morning and afternoon sessions of camp to ensure that each camper receives individualized attention. All of the campers will perform at Common Ground on Saturday, July 13 after the Color Run event.”
The Grand Rapids-based band, the Outer Vibe, is leading the camp. The five-member band will help the campers improve their technique and teach the teens about creating, performing in, and promoting their own rock bands.
“The Rock Camp bands will begin as the Color Run finishes right in front of our stage. It will be a prime day and time,” said Lisa Kacos, who plays trumpet and keyboard in the Outer Vibe. “Common Ground Festival is a great event to be part of; it's a real rock show on a big stage and the campers get to be true rock stars.”
The teen campers will perform during a free Saturday matinee show and will be followed by the Outer Vibe and Fifth Harmony from The X Factor.
The Rock Camp is a half-day camp with morning and afternoon sections. The morning session runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the afternoon session runs 2-6 p.m. The camp is geared toward students ages 11-18 with some experience playing the guitar, drums, keyboard, bass or vocals. Students will form and work in their own bands based on musical interest and skill levels. Camp will focus on skills such as songwriting, marketing, promotion, sound, and more. Rock Camp concludes with the Common Ground performance at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13.
