The National Weather Service says Michigan State is now a storm-ready university. The school applied for the designation.
It means MSU has procedures in place to handle severe weather events, like more than one way to receive severe weather warnings, and to alert the public, among other things.
"To develop individual buiding plans, evacuation plans for lightning, for instance, in the football stadium. Or tornado shelter identification in the buildings and making those extra steps to identify shelters and provide information on where those shelters are," explained Jim Maczko, warning coordination meteorologist.
Staff and faculty are trained on evacuation procedures, and students are told about what to do in case of emergency weather situations
