Crash Numbers Down, Fatalities Up
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning is reporting that number of traffic accidents were lower in 2012 compared to 2011, but the number of people killed in traffic accident was up 5%.
936 people were killed on Michigan roads in 2012, compared to 889 in 2011. The number of traffic crashes fell 4% to 273,891 from 284,049 in 2011.
Motorcyclist fatalities were up 18% over 2011. Alcohol- and drug-involved fatalities went up 3% to 281 and 6% to 135 respectively. Teen fatalities declined 14%, from 99 in 2011 to 85 in 2012.
The state has experienced significant decreases in traffic crashes over the past decade, from 395,515 in 2002 to 273,891 in 2012. Similarly, alcohol- and/or drug-involved fatalities have dropped from 463 in 2002 to 342 in 2012.
