The city of Lansing has set February 9 as the date for its next gun buyback program. It will take place at the Tabernacle of David Church at 2645 W. Holmes Rd in Lansing, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The "Guns for Groceries" program will exchange Meijer gift cards for operable guns. People who turn in a long gun will receive a $50 card, $100 cards will be given for a handgun and a $150 card will be given for each military-style assault weapons.
The buyback, the city's second, is being funded by a $10,000 donation from Sparrow Health System, McLaren Greater Lansing and the Michigan Health and Hospitals Association. Another $5,000 was donated by various individuals, businesses and organizations.
The weapons will be accepted with "no questions asked." Eligible firearms must be manufactured by a bonafide firearms company. BB guns, pellet guns, homemade guns and toy guns will be accepted, but will not be eligible for a gift card.
All guns turned in at the collection point must be enclosed in a sealed container and transported to the site in a legal manner, which is unloaded and locked in the trunk of a vehicle.
