Take a walk into any department store the day after Christmas and, sure enough, the return line is always there. These days, however, it's getting shorter and shorter.
Okemos Meijer Store Director, Chris Wilson, says with more and more people buying gift cards, returns have gone down year-after-year and December 26th is now more about the post-Christmas deals.
"We've got a lot of items like fragrance gift sets, bath sets," said Wilson. "A lot of our winter clothing has gone on clearance as well."
At Meridian Mall, signs claiming 75 percent off are what brings the customers in the day after Christmas.
"Many of the stores are up to 80 percent off," said Claudia Bleil, Marketing Specialist for Meridian Mall. "It gives the retailer the opportunity to use all the inventory they have in their stores and make room for the spring merchandise."
While those markdowns definitely bring the foot traffic into the stores, it's the customers who are reaping all the benefits.
"I got a coat from Old Navy. It was $80 and I only spent $20, so you can't miss deals like that," said shopper, Larae Griggs.
For shoppers, like Griggs, the deals are a chance to get started on next year's shopping.
"I like to buy the stuff that I might not have gotten this year, but I'll use it next year," said Griggs.
