Teams Who Lost Game 1 and Went On to Win World Series
Fret not, Tigers fans. A loss in Game 1 of the World Series is not a death sentence - see the other teams in the last few decades who went on to win after an initial loss. The Detroit Free Press compiled the list.
The Detroit Tigers would be the first to do it in 20 years.
1992: Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays lost Game 1, but went on to win the World Series against the Oakland A's in six games.
1981: L.A. Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in six games.
1979: Pittsburgh Pirates
This series went to seven games against the Baltimore Orioles, but the Pirates went on to win it after losing their first game.
1978: New York Yankees
The Los Angeles Dodgers took Game 1, but the Yankees went on to win the series in six.
1975: Cincinnati Reds
It came down to Game 7 against the Boston Red Sox, and Cincinnati came out on top.
1971: Pittsburgh Pirates
Another tough series for the Pirates and Baltimore Orioles, but the Pirates took this one in seven games.
1969: New York Mets
Baltimore had another tough break. After winning Game 1, the Mets won the final four games to take the series.
1968: Detroit Tigers
Following a loss in Game 1 to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Tigers rallied and won the World Series in seven games.
