Plans Set for 2013 Lansing Marathon
Plans are in full stride for next year’s Lansing Marathon happening on April 21, 2013, along with other events.
Today's press conference focused on a key factor: bringing our community and our city together.
Some notable changes to this year is the races will be spread out over the weekend. Saturday, April 20th, Downtown Lansing will host the 5K race and the 1.5K race for kids. On Sunday, will be the Marathon and Half-Marathon. "We made the change to span two days, moving the 5K and kids race to Saturday, not only to make it better logistically, but also to create that feeling of a family fun day."
“The magnitude of effort that goes into planning a signature event such as the Lansing Marathon is significant, and definitely a 365 days a year commitment,” said race director Owen Anderson.
One individual who was particularly impressed with the success of Lansing’s inaugural marathon was Mayor Bernero, an early supporter of the event. “The vision that Owen Anderson and his team brought to me exceeded my expectations,” said Bernero. He also spoke about the presenting sponsor and what it means to have a great partner, "Without the support and embrace of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, we wouldn't be here celebrating it's success and planning for the future."
Blue Cross Blue Shield and Blue Care Network of Michigan was the 2012 presenting sponsor, and will be again for 2013. Vice President Tricia A. Keith spoke about what it means to be involved in an event like this that brings the community together. "We at Blue Cross have made a big commitment to the City of Lansing and building healthy communities. We encourage people at any level to get out and get active."
Also underway as part of event organizers’ commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle through activity is the “ACE” Program in area schools and community centers. Supported by Two Men and a Truck, ACE gets young people involved in the areas of Activity, Community involvement, and Educational achievement.
