Update: Arrest in Jackson Co. Bank Robbery
JACKSON - Police arrest a man hiding in a dumpster following a morning armed bank robbery in Jackson Wednesday. Another "person of interest" was taken into custody at Allegiance hospital. This was the sixth bank robbery in Jackson County in the last two months. Investigators say it's too soon to tell if this suspect is the man who robbed the other banks.
Today's robbery took place shortly after 9 o'clock at the City County Credit Union on Francis Street in Summit Township, just south of Jackson. County Sheriff Steve Rand says the man entered the bank, showed a clerk a handgun and demanded money. The clerk complied and the thief left the branch and got into a car.
Police were able to locate the car, and a pursuit began north toward the city. The car crashed into a home near the intersection of Jackson Street and Biddle Street. Two people in the car ran off.
Sheriff's deputies and police officers began searching the neighborhood. Two hours later we were there when officers discovered a man hiding in a dumpster outside a liquor store in the area of the crash.
Sheriff Rand says that some time earlier a woman appeared at the hospital with injuries consistent with a car crash. Investigators took her into custody as a person of interest.
The City County Credit Union was also robbed September 25.
On Monday the Aeroquip Credit Union just west of Jackson in Blackman Township was robbed. That was robbed on August 8 as well.
A Comerica Bank branch in Spring Arbor was robbed September 21. The Citizens Bank on East Michigan Avenue in Jackson was robbed September 22.
The sheriff emphasizes that they can not, this early in the investigation, say whether Wednesday's robbery is related, but they strongly investigating the possibility.
The Jackson County Sheriff's office tells us the Credit Union bank on Francis Street was robbed Wednesday morning.
The suspect was armed and on the loose.
Police are investigating the situation and following leads.
