After a messy night, tenants in a Lansing apartment are back at home, but they're not happy.
On Sunday a sewage backup forced around 60 people out of the Arlington Apartments on the 5900 block of Richmond Street.
Signs telling tenants the building is dangerous have come down. The city says plumbing crews have been to the apartment and the problem has been taken care of. People living there don't agree, they still feel unsafe.
"Seriously they don't take care of it," tenant Ali Jassim said, of the complex.
Apartment management wouldn't talk on camera, but did say the put all tenants up for the night at a nearby hotel. In a statement, they detailed the work they've done, saying a crew of six removed all carpet, sanitized surfaces and eliminated the smell.
Tenants got a free meal from the apartment company. They say they'd rather have regular maintenance.
"They say they will take care of it and they will not," Jassim added.
While the sewage problem has been fixed, he calls conditions in other buildings deplorable. Tenants took us inside one building, pointing out filthy, stained carpet and busted doors littering the hallway. They also showed us gaping door frames and broken window sills, they say they've repeatedly asked the company to fix.
"Those things harm us and we may get sick," tenant Bissnu Csapazai said.
Csapazai claims the company never cleans and doesn't respond to calls.
An apartment manager defends the complex, saying management is responsive and has worked hard to clear the sewage.
Most tenants pay around $600 a month to live in the complex.
If not for their lease agreements, they say they would leave immediately.
"I don't know who would give them a license (city permit) for it (the complex)," Jassim said. "It is not healthy."
We contacted code compliance officers with the city to see if any complaints have been filed against this company and if any of those complaints have gone unresolved.
Our calls were not returned. We will keep checking into this story and let you know what we uncover.
